A 20th Issue Pivot Well, here we are. Twenty issues deep, and honestly? I wasn’t sure we’d make it this far. We’ve riffed on logos, fonts, process, projects, and playlists, and somehow, every Monday(ish), we’ve kept this thing rolling. As a studio, the last six months have been a big season of change. Not only the shift of working together, but a shift in how we see Idle Hands, who we’re working with, and what we’re putting into the world. It’s pushed us to reflect not just on the work we do, but on the why behind it. After a lot of early morning writing, rewriting, and staring at the ceiling, here’s what I’ve landed on as our mission: We make the world a better place through design. Yeah, I know, it sounds lofty. Maybe even a bit airy fairy. But I can’t shake it. Because if I didn’t believe this work actually made life better for people, I don’t think I’d have the juice to keep at it. So how does design actually make the world better? For me, it all comes down to feeling. Good design isn’t just about looking slick, it’s about creating moments that make people feel something. A smile. Curiosity. Excitement. Inspiration. Maybe even reflection. Without those moments, life feels flat. Bland. Forgettable. And the last thing I want to do is put more bland into the world. That’s why we care so much about the details. The way a logo carries weight. The way a layout sets a tone. The way the right typeface can make you really feel the message. Even the supporting systems and operations that make it a better experience for everyone involved. Because design done right brings more joy, more connection, and more meaning into everyday life. But here’s where the reflection got interesting: if we’re only serving one client at a time, our mission has a pretty limited reach. A handful of brands per year means a handful of ripples. So how do we create more waves? By sharing. By putting out the insights, systems, and tools we use, not just for the clients sitting across the Google Meet, but for: Brand Owners & Operators. You’re running your own business or shaping the brand you work for. We want to give you practical tools to get the most out of your brand and build something that truly connects. Designers. As a self-taught designer, I still feel some imposter syndrome saying this, but I’ve learned a ton of things the hard way, and each time, those lessons changed everything for me. If sharing them helps even one designer get further, faster, it’s worth it.
The truth is we can only work with 5–10 clients at a time. But by sharing what we know here, we can help the hundreds (maybe one-day, thousands) of people who read these emails, share our tips, and apply them in their own business. And those designers? They’ll go on to work with 5–10 clients each. That ripple effect starts to add up fast. So consider this issue a reset button. We’ve ran with the tagline of “No Fluff. Just Good Stuff.” since we kicked off this weekly design dose, and I want this newsletter to be the thing that lands in your inbox that you can’t wait to read, and implement what’s inside. From here forward, From the Desk is going deeper. All killer, no filler. Instead of three shorter sections, each week we’ll dive into one topic. Something you can actually use in your brand or your work. The stuff we used to cover in “Fresh Off the Desk” or “On Our Radar” will still show up, but it’ll be woven into the bigger picture. And for those of you who are here for the skim, don’t worry, we’ll add a TL;DR at the end of each issue so you can get the goods without the full heart-felt essay.
